The Austin-Healey 3000: Now widely recognized as one of the biggest British sports cars of all time.
In 1945 , Donald Mitchell Healey, automotive engineer and racing driver , who won the Monte Carlo Rally in 1931 and second in the same rally in 1932 , created the " Warwick Healey Motor Company ." In 1952 the area of Earls Court Motor Show in London , Donald Healey introduced its latest model Healey "100" , it was a 2-seater sports roadster , powered by a stylish Austin 4 cylinder 2.6 liter . The public success was immediate. DMH the first day of the show an agreement with Sir Leonard Lord of Austin who needed a sports model to compete with its rivals (MG and Triumph ) . The Austin -Healey "100" was put into production soon in Austin Longbridge plant . It is now known , in fact , talks between Leonard Lord and Donald Healey took place before the "show" and that discussions on a possible agreement between them was allowed to use mechanical Austin. The Austin -Healey "100" was a big commercial success and more than 14 000 copies were made in the 3 years that followed. End of 1956 the 4 cylinder was replaced by a six-cylinder , known as the "100 Six " to later be replaced by the Austin -Healey 3000 - now widely recognized as one of the biggest British sports cars of all time . Austin -Healey continued to produce cars until 1972 , the 20-year agreement between Healey and Austin is expired . Donald Healey left the company in 1968 , when the British Motor Corporation ( Austin merged with Morris in 1952 to form BMC) was taken over by British Leyland . Donald Healey was later awarded a CBE . He died in January 1988 at the age of 89 years .
