The drift does not yet exist, the windshield is only in front of the pilot and the passenger seat is covered by an aluminum panel.

In 1956 for the 24 Hours of Le Mans the car was modified to comply with the new regulations (the transformation is on the windshield which surrounds the total width of the car, the tank is limited to 130 liters there is a real passenger side door, the aluminum barrel cover is replaced by a sheet of Plexiglas.

For the race, the bad luck persists and all the factory Jaguars are eliminated, the XKD 501 of the Ecurie Ecosse, without injection, without Wide Angle cylinder head, but with the ultra-rapid change plates will go up the Aston Martin DB 3S and will save the honor of the Coventry plant.

XKD 501 Built at the beginning of 1955, is the very first Type D specially designed for a client, Ecurie Ecosse. The car was purchased by Jimmy Stewart, Jacky's older brother, for the race. He did not actually fly the XKD 501 because he crashed twice during training sessions in May. Each time, the D-Type had to be returned to Jaguar for repair. The second accident also ruled him out for this year's 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Later in the year, Desmond Titterington and Ninian Sanderson raced successfully on the British Isles. He has won several podiums and class victories.

For the 1956 season, it was equipped with a full-width windshield to comply with the latest regulations. A new engine has also been installed. The car retained its form from late 1955 and even won a victory at Goodwood. During the round of the World Championship in Reims, he placed fourth behind three of the last D-Type series cars.
